The Holidays!!

Wow everyone, this has been a very stressful and busy month, well at least for me. Thanksgiving, working, cooking, cleaning and spending time with family and friends. Now Christmas is right around the corner and I found myself breaking my neck to finish all the shopping and preparing things for the big day. This year I am doing things a little different, every year I buy clothes and shoes and things the kids need and put them under the tree along with the things they want. This year I am taking a different approach and not going to worry about trying to figure out what everyone wants and decided to give each of my children an amount they have to spend on clothes and will take them shopping the day after Christmas so they can pick out exactly what they want. This will help me get the right size and will eliminate the long return line after Christmas or the unwanted clothes that sit in the closet and wasted money. I think my new plan will work out great for everyone and the children on Christmas day will only open the things they wanted instead of opening socks and underwear LOL!!

Unit 5 Halfway There!

Ok everyone at Kaplan we are almost done with class and so far so good. This week are discussing writing styles and I love the freewriting style and think that is the best thing for. I love freewriting because it gives myself time to think about my topic and put what my thoughts on paper and then I can look up facts to back up what I was thinking and write a better paper. I hope this technique allows me to be successful in my final project.

As of now I really don't have any academic challenges except to stay focused and take the time to do my work at a reasonable time. I tend to put my class work off until the last minute due to a busy lifestyle and I need to make sure that I post and do the work in a timely manner so I don't lose points. Over the months and different classes I get better and better as each term goes by and I am getting better in disciplining myself to sit, read and write.

School at this point has been a great and promising reward to me. I love that I am finally accomplishing one of my goals in life and think I have a long journey ahead of me. Learning and growing everyday is very self inspiring. I look forward to the many different experiences and things I can learn to help me be a better person.

plagiarism

Hello everyone at Kaplan! This week we learned about plagiarism, what it is, and why it is such a huge topic at Kaplan University. Plagiarism is basically taking credit for another writer's work. When writing a paper and looking up information either on the internet, books, magazines or articles, it is easy to take a portion of the sentence and incorporate it into your own writing and without citing the source this is plagiarism. There are so many plagiarism issues that are going on today and I think we should handle them as a serious manner. We all learned how important it is to cite our information and references of our work. Great week everyone and see you next week.

Being an online student

To tell you a little about myself, I would like to start by saying that I am a single mother of 3 children who are all 4 years apart, two boys and a girl. My schedule was working two jobs, taking care of 3 children, 2 cats, a dog, hamster, husband and attend school full time. WHEW my life was CRAZY busy. I am finally adjusting due to making some small changes in my life such as not going to school at my community college and sit in class but to attend school online at Kaplan University to achieve the goal of getting my BA degree. I quit one of my jobs and husband, and changed my full time job to work 5 days a week but only work 6 hour shifts, which gives me more time home with the kids. Yes my life is a little more stable now, so now I only need to get rid of a cat and a hamster and I should be ok, just kidding. Online school is the best thing I could have done because it gives me the flexibility that I need being that I have such a busy and crazy life. I am able to pick the hours and days that I want to attend the online seminar class and can study whenever I have down time. Kaplan is one of the few schools that offers a degree in nutrition which was not available at the community college in my area so I was eager to sign up ASAP. I have been an online student for almost a year now and I am determined to finish and go all the way to finally get my degree.

I believe this blog will help us communicate better as well as the discussion board so I look forward to remarks and feedback.

The two topics I decided for the final project were the effects of sugar on the body and the effects of alcohol on the body. I decided to go with the effects of alcohol on the body and started my thesis statement as follows:
The effects of alcohol on the body can cause many health related problems. Alcohol causes problems to the internal organs, skin and brain.

Do you think the opening thesis is too short or do I need to add something more to get my point across?

Taken Advantage of!!

It always seems like it happens this way, one thing goes wrong and another thing follows. Last week my bathroom leaked into my livingroom, my closet doors broke and fell off, my back glass sliding door broke and my handle fell of the stove WHAT NEXT!!

As I ran to Home Depot, I was thinking I need to get this fixed ASAP. I had the guy come out to measure to not only fix the leak but remodel my bathroom as well. I got the call with my estimate yesterday for my bathroom for $16,000.00 dollars, that is SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!! I said, are you crazy, and they told me 8 thousand per bathroom. I felt so taken advantage of and that price did not include what I needed to buy for supplies that was just for labor. I had estimates from other construction guys in the amount of under three thousands dollars. So the question is, how come I can get someone to fix my bathroom, new sink, tub, tile floors, paint and do the job for under 3,000.00 and that includes supplies and labor and Home Depot charges over five thousand more just for labor? Something is wrong with that picture. I lost all respect for name stores who have been around for some time, and feel they need to check their outside contractors before letting them represent their company. I will never do business with them again!
